Canterbury men 4 Oxted men 2
Canterbury's men returned to the top of the Conference East with a hard-fought victory against Oxted at Polo Farm on Saturday.
Kwan Browne’s side lost their lead in the table with defeat to title rivals Old Loughtonians last month and with the games running out it was beginning to look like another frustrating season. But the 4-2 win against Oxted at the weekend, coupled with Old Loughtonians’ goalless draw at Holcombe, Canterbury moved two points clear in the Conference East with just three games of the season remaining.
Mickel Pierre put the home side in front on just three minutes, but it failed to spark further goals and Oxted levelled just before half-time. Pierre re-established the lead nine minutes into the second-half and Thomas Richford made it 3-1 to give Canterbury some breathing space.
Oxted had only lost by a single goal when the sides met earlier in the season and they refused to go quietly, pulling a goal back shortly afterwards. Any nerves were settled four minutes from time when Richford scored his second to seal a 13th league win in 15 games. The side visit Sevenoaks this Sunday.
Canterbury’s ladies continued their stuttering outdoor season with a 1-0 defeat at Bowdon Hightown last Sunday. Veteran Tina Cullen scored the only goal of the game on 11 minutes to inflict a second defeat in four games on Ian Jennings’ side.
Canterbury remain fourth at the head of a congested Premier Division mid-table. They host in-form Slough at Polo Farm this Saturday.
