The preferred site for Canterbury’s long-awaited football hub has been announced.

Ridlands Farm, near Kent and Canterbury Hospital in the southern part of the city was named by the council as the best site for the hub.

The development will provide a long term home for Canterbury Football Club as well as five-a-side pitches, an artificial pitch, grass pitches and a clubhouse featuring a state-of-the-art gym.

The council must now look at drawing up plans for the hub, and obtaining planning permission for the site, and crucially raising the money needed to go ahead with the plans.

Canterbury council’s executive member for culture, Cllr Harry Cragg, said the new hub would be a top-notch facility for the district.

He said: “This development would provide a wonderful home for Canterbury City FC and also a centre for community football, which would complement the city’s existing strengths in hockey, cricket and rugby.

“There remains a lot of work to do, both with the potential site and the overall delivery of the project, but the council will continue to work with the football club and other partners to make this exciting project a reality.”

Canterbury City FC will be organising a consultation event where people can find out about the plans and discuss any issues they may have with the project.
