Kent is worst in region for bird crime

Raptors are often in the firing line for criminals
Kent has the worst record in the South East for crimes against birds, according to figures released by the RSPB.

There were 81 incidents of illegal killing of birds or destruction of their nests in the region during 2007 – and 35 of these were in the county.

Three offences against birds of prey or owls were reported, plus 32 incidents involving other birds.

These include the unconfirmed shooting of a buzzard in Elham, a sparrowhawk reported shot in Doddington and the suspected poisoning of an owl in Burham.

Other crimes include a man reported kicking a starling to death in Sheerness, plus a brent goose and various seagulls illegally shot.

A person was also caught destroying house martin nests in the Sandwich area by blasting them off the side of a building with a garden hose.

Hester Phillips of RSPB South East said: “The South East accounts for a small proportion of birdcrime across the UK, which is something we should be proud of, but one incident is still too many.

“Across the UK, the number of reports coming in to us are the highest we have ever had, but we are still only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

“It is hard to say whether the problem is increasing or whether we are just getting to hear about more of the offences that are taking place.

“What is clear is that very large numbers of birds are being illegally killed every year and that is totally unacceptable in a civilised society. There has to be a greater effort to enforce the law.”

Reports of crimes against all wild birds across the UK were at record levels for a second year in a row, with 1,208 separate incidents reported to the RSPB’s investigations department in 2007.

The RSPB asked people who care about our birds of prey to pledge their support for an end to illegal killing at http://www.rspb.org.uk/supporting/campaigns/birdsofprey/index.asp.
