Robbers sprayed and punched a man in the face before making off in his white Ford Transit van.
The attack took place in Front Brents, Faversham, at about 5.30am on Wednesday.
Police are asking for anyone with information about the three robbers – who later dumped the vehicle in Aylesham, near Canterbury – to come forward.
They are described as white, wearing woollen hats and dark clothing.
It is not known what substance was sprayed in the motorist’s face. He suffered bruising from the punch but did not require hospital attention.
Sergeant Stuart Samson, of Kent Police, said he would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the robbery, or who may have seen the van being driven along the A2 towards Brenley Corner.
He added: “These three individuals need to be caught.
“They carried out this vicious robbery with no thought for the victim.”
Anyone with information should call Swale police on 01795 419306 quoting reference CY/14606/08, or Kent CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
