A penalty stroke from Natalie Seymour ended Canterbury ladies’ long wait for a win as they beat University of Birmingham 2-1 at Polo Farm on Sunday.
It was the first victory in seven Premier Division games for Ian Jennings’ side, who began the season with high hopes of a top two finish.
Sarah Kerly’s 30th-minute strike gave the home side a slender lead at half-time, which was wiped out by Holly Payne six minutes after the break.
The game could have gone either way, but Canterbury grabbed what proved to be the decisive goal 13 minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty. Seymour stepped up and the England international coolly fired home to earn a morale boosting victory.
Canterbury have every chance of going into the winter break on a high, with a trip to rock bottom Trojans their final assignment this Saturday. Jennings’ team won 10-1 when the sides met in September.
The club’s men also enjoyed a narrow win, beating Southgate 3-2 away on Saturday. Ross Gilham-Jones put the visitors in front early on and despite being pegged back, Jess Dowsing’s strike a minute before the interval gave them a half-time lead.
Southgate again responded, but Leigh Barratt’s first league goal of the season on 56 minutes made the difference.
The victory over the third-placed side means the Conference East is now effectively a two horse race. Canterbury remain second to Old Loughtonians on goal difference and host Chelmsford in their final game before the break this Saturday.
