Builders reported hearing footsteps making their way across the floor above the bar, a room which is now part of the first floor art gallery. Unnerving though this was, the work continued.
Then engineers said the whole floor was unsound and would have to be replaced.
Tiziana said: “It was when they were clearing out the rubble after the old floor had been removed.
“We were out at the time, and when we got back, we found these two burly builders shaking on the doorstep, and refusing to go back in. They said “we just heard footsteps on a floor that wasn’t there!”
Co –owner Michael Dowling said: “We thought they were joking at first, but they were white and shaking.”
From then on the builders only worked in pairs.
Then an electrician working in the loft early one morning got the fright of his life when his builder’s lamp smashed, but still seemingly lit, appeared to float through the air.
Tiziana said: “He rushed down to the bar and refused to go back upstairs. We spend an hour calming him down. He took the next day off.”
Staff have reported banging doors, security camera sensors that trip for no reason, and flickering lights. And for some reason, customers seem to avoid using the back stairs leading down to the bar from the gallery.
But Tiziana says they are all becoming used to their supernatural guest, who, inexplicably, everyone refers to as a ‘her’.
“We talk to her, ask if she is ok. And she likes the music. When the music is on, nothing seems to happen.”
Michael is more sceptical.
He said: “It’s not anything ominous; it’s not an evil spirit that is stalking us or anything. There are strange occurrences, but doors banging and the stroking sensations people have felt could easily be drafts.”
Deco 5’s owners are looking into the history of the building to see if they can shed any light on the ghostly goings-on, and are interested to hear from anyone who might know anything.
